SOUTHS coach Trude Yen says Maryville Tavern could be hard to stop in the finals despite her side beating them35-26 to clinch the Newcastle open netball championship minor premiership.

The Lions were down 9-7 at quarter-timeof the round 11 game played in high winds at National Park on Saturdaybut they edged ahead 23-22 by three-quarter time.

Yen then called for closer marking of Maryville attackers Lara Cranfield and Claudia Russell, while Tiffany Gilmour played a key role for Souths afterswitching from goal shooter to goal attack. Katelyn Stansfield was on target for Souths as theymoved six points ahead of the league on 39 points with two games to play.Yen said Maryville, who dropped to third on 31 points, two behind Nova, shaped as serious threats in the play-offs.

“If this game is any indication of what the finals will be like, it should be fun,” Yen laughed.“They are a very good side and if they maintain that form, they could be hard to stop.”
