Toaster causes Victoria Point house fire

The two-bedroom cottage went up in flames about 10.30am, just a few hours before it was due to go up for auction.

Specialist investigators scoured the property on Sunday to determine the cause of the fire.

A police spokesperson told the Redland City Bulletininvestigators had found the fire to be caused by a toaster that had not been switched off.

They declared the fire as non-suspicious.

The house, which had been demarcated as a crime scene after the blaze, was handed back to the owner at 11.50am on Sunday.

The house was due to be auctioned at 1pm on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, the station officer of Redland Bay Fire Station David Merrick said the fire was well underway when firefighters arrived about eight minutes after receiving the call.

Extra precautions were taken as asbestos was involved, but the house had been destroyed by the time the firewas brought under control.

Three fire trucks and12 firefightersattended the scene, together with police, ambulance service personnel and Energex workers.

Mr Merrick said the owner had gone outfor about 20 minutes when the fire started.

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.

The house is at the end of Colburn Avenue nearVictoria Point Reserve.
